Working with Brainbridge
Do I have to pay anything to work with Brainbridge?
No. Our services are completely free for freelance IT consultants. We are paid by the client, not by you.
Do you work with all IT profiles?
We work exclusively with freelance IT consultants in Belgium. We cover the full IT landscape, from developers and architects to project managers, business analysts and security specialists. If you’re unsure whether your profile fits, just get in touch and we’ll give you an honest answer.
Will my CV be sent to clients without my knowledge?
Never. We always discuss an opportunity with you first and only introduce your profile with your explicit consent.
What if there’s no immediate match?
We add you to our network and stay in touch. Some of our best matches happen before a vacancy ever goes live. Being in our network means you’re on our radar when something relevant comes up.
What happens when my assignment is coming to an end?
Kristof proactively reaches out before your project ends to explore what’s next — whether that’s a renewal, a new opportunity within the same client, or a fresh introduction elsewhere in our network. You’re never left to figure it out on your own.
How long does it take to find an assignment?
That depends on your profile, availability and the current market. We give you an honest read of the market from the very first conversation, so you always know where you stand.
I’m just starting out as a freelancer.
Can you help me?
Absolutely. Whether you’re an experienced IT professional or just making the switch to freelancing, we’re happy to help. If you have a solid IT background and are ready to take the step towards independence, we can guide you through the process: from understanding the market to finding your first assignment. Starting strong matters. We make sure you do.
How do you introduce my profile to clients?
Your profile is introduced personally by one of our account managers: people with long-term relationships with the organisations we work with. We prepare the introduction carefully to position your expertise in the right context.
How quickly will I hear back after applying?
We aim to get back to every applicant within one business day.
Do you help with rate negotiations?
Yes. We advise on market-realistic rates from the very first conversation and support you when rates come up for discussion during or after an assignment.
Who is my point of contact once I start on an assignment?
Once you start, our Field Manager Kristof Galère becomes your dedicated point of contact. He follows your assignment closely, supports you during onboarding and offboarding, and thinks along about what comes next well before your contract ends.
Starting as a freelancer
What does it mean to work as a freelance IT consultant in Belgium?
As a freelance IT consultant, you work as an independent professional, typically through your own company, on project-based assignments for one or multiple clients. You are responsible for your own invoicing, taxes and social contributions, but you gain flexibility, autonomy and often a significantly higher earning potential compared to employment.
Do I need to set up a company first?
In most cases, yes. The majority of Belgian clients and staffing partners, including Brainbridge, work with consultants who invoice through their own entity. The most common structures are a eenmanszaak (sole proprietorship) or a BV/SRL (private limited company). Each has different implications for taxes, liability and social contributions.
What is the difference between a eenmanszaak and a BV/SRL?
A eenmanszaak is simpler and cheaper to set up, but offers no separation between your personal and professional assets. A BV/SRL is more complex administratively, but limits your personal liability and can be more tax-efficient once your income reaches a certain level. We recommend speaking to an accountant to decide what suits your situation best.
How do I determine my day rate?
Your day rate depends on your expertise, seniority, technology stack and the type of client you’re targeting. As a rough guide, rates in the Belgian freelance IT market typically range from €400 to €900+ per day depending on profile and experience. We give you an honest market assessment from the very first conversation.
Do I need a VAT number?
Yes. As a freelancer invoicing for services in Belgium, you are generally required to register for VAT. Your accountant or the ITAA (Institute of Tax Advisors and Accountants) can guide you through the registration process.
What about social security and pension?
As a self-employed professional in Belgium, you pay social contributions quarterly through a sociaal verzekeringsfonds (social insurance fund). These contributions cover healthcare, disability and a basic pension. Because the freelance pension in Belgium is limited, many consultants supplement this with a VAPZ (Vrij Aanvullend Pensioen voor Zelfstandigen) or an IPT (Individuele Pensioentoezegging) through their company.
What costs should I account for as a freelancer?
Beyond social contributions and taxes, common costs include accountancy fees, insurance (professional liability is strongly recommended), tools and software, and any training or certifications you invest in. A good accountant will help you structure these efficiently.
Is freelancing in IT a stable career choice in Belgium?
The Belgian market has a structural demand for experienced IT professionals. Assignments in our network typically last six months or longer, and many consultants work through us on consecutive projects over several years. Stability in freelancing comes from your expertise, your network and how well you are positioned in the market, all things we actively support.
